Description

This Emergency Mexican Official Standard is intended to promote the optimal harvesting of tuna fish while reducing the incidental catch of juvenile specimens of yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) and bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus). 	This Standard is mandatory for those who engage in tuna fishing activities using purse-seine vessels that operate in waters under Mexican federal jurisdiction and using purse-seine tuna vessels under the Mexican flag that operate in international waters or in waters under the jurisdiction of other countries of the Eastern Pacific Ocean and Atlantic Ocean, including the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea. 	The Standard will also be mandatory, where applicable, for those engaged in the processing and distribution—through to the final destination—of tuna, tuna products and by-products resulting from catches made with the vessels specified in Section 1.2 of this Standard. The Standard will also be mandatory for those who market tuna, tuna products and by-products in the national territory.
