Description

Legislation to restrict, for a period of two years, consideration and approval by the relevant agency of applications to release GMOs into the environment.  The amendments will apply to applications to import GMOs for release, and to applications to release GMOs from containment.  There are exceptions for applications to release GMOs that provide direct medical benefits to human and animal health, namely medicines which are approved under sections 20, 23 or 30 of the Medicines Act 1981, or approved under sections 9 or 26 of the Agricultural Compounds and Veterinary Medicines Act 1997.  In addition, the emergency provisions of the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996 will still apply, enabling the emergency importation of live GMOs.
