Esta norma actualiza la metodología de ensayo y análisis, necesaria para la determinación de residuo carbonoso en los petróleos en general y en los lubricantes y combustibles, para establecer la tendencia a formar depósitos de carbón. No se ha considerado la norma internacional ISO 4262: 1993 Petroleum products – Determinación of carbon residue Rambsbottom method, debido a que el instrumental utilizado en los laboratorios chilenos se ajusta a la norma ASTM. Se ha tomado como base la norma ASTM D 524 –97, Standard test method for Ramsbottom carbon residue of petroleum products, siendo idéntica a la misma.
