Description

The safety standard was created to reduce the chances of small parts releasing or coming off toys during play or after reasonable wear and tear, helping to prevent choking, suffocation, or death._x000D_
The ACCC has now completed the review of the safety standard and recommended the Minister update it to allow suppliers to comply with one of four recognised standards for toys - the Australian Standard, the International (ISO) Standard, the European (EN) Standard or the USA (ASTM) Standard._x000D_
In addition, the safety standard specifically requires that all toys for children up to and including 36 months of age containing any type of battery must have the battery compartment secured in such a way that it can only be accessed by using a tool._x000D_
The Minister has agreed with the ACCC’s recommendation, and the new safety standard commenced on 5 September 2023. The new safety standard is published on the Federal Register of Legislation and can be accessed here: Consumer Goods (Toys for Children up to and including 36 Months of Age) Safety Standard 2023 (legislation.gov.au)
