Description
The proposed regulation notified in G/TBT/N/CAN/688 (dated 16 January 2023) was adopted and published in Canada Gazette, Part II on 20 December 2023.The Passenger Automobile and Light Truck Greenhouse Gas EmissionRegulations have established progressively more stringent greenhouse gas emission standards for new light-duty vehicles since the 2011 model year. In the December 2020 Strengthened Climate Plan, the Government announced its intention to improve the efficiency of light-duty vehicles in the post-2025 period by aligning with the most stringent standards in North America. The 2030 Emissions Reduction Plan subsequently committed the Government to develop a light-duty vehicles (LDV) zero emission vehicle (ZEV) sales mandate, which will set annually increasing requirements towards achieving 100% LDV ZEV sales by 2035, including mandatory interim targets of at least 20% of all new LDVs offered for sale by 2026 and at least 60% by 2030. The Regulations implement these commitments by amending the current Regulations to add zero-emission vehicle requirements, beginning with model year 2026, as well as making administrative amendments to the current Regulations on pre-2026 model year vehicles, beginning with model year 2023. The most recent publication of Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Regulations Amending the Passenger Automobile and Light Truck Greenhouse Gas Emission Regulations will help Canada achieve its climate commitments.
