Description
Food Standards Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ) is considering application A1269 which seeks to permit the sale of cultured quail cells, derived from embryonic fibroblasts of Japanese quail. The quail cells will be mixed with other ingredients to form products such as, but not limited to, logs, rolls and patties. The aspects of this application that are relevant to the TBT Committee are that:FSANZ is proposing a new regulatory framework consisting of two new standards and one new schedule:Standard 1.5.4 – Cell-cultured foodsSchedule 25A – Permitted cell-cultured foodsStandard 3.4.1 – Food safety requirements for processing of cell-cultured foodcell cultured foods will require the use of either the statement ‘cell-cultured’ or ‘cell-cultivated’ for food identification purposes.
